“We’re still riding the high off the wonderful energy of the 2025 NEXTies! Thank you Event Santa Cruz for creating space for the community celebration and honoring those that work so hard to make Santa Cruz County a place where everyone can thrive.”

There are nights in Santa Cruz that feel like more than just events—they feel like a homecoming. The 2025 NEXTies was one of those nights.

As co-producers of this year’s awards, we at Santa Cruz Vibes didn’t just witness the celebration—we felt it. From the moment the lights came up at Woodhouse Blending & Brewing, it was clear: this wasn’t just about handing out trophies. It was about recognizing the people who quietly—and sometimes boldly—shape the heartbeat of Santa Cruz. The evening reinforced what we’ve long believed: when a community comes together to share stories of creativity, leadership, and empathy, it creates something lasting.

And the public response confirmed it.

The night was punctuated with standing ovations—each one louder than the last. The crowd didn’t just applaud the honorees; they embraced them. From tearful acceptance speeches to surprise shoutouts, the room felt electric with sincerity. And in the days that followed, that energy didn’t fade. Social feeds, texts, and emails were filled with gratitude and praise—not just for the winners, but for the spirit of the event itself. Many called it a “heartfelt love letter to our community.” Others simply said: “This is what Santa Cruz is all about.”

One of the night’s most unexpected highlights came courtesy of our house DJ, SELECTA7 (Osha B), who elevated the event with a performance that was part soundtrack, part showmanship, and all heart. By crafting and delivering custom walk-up songs for each honoree, he created a moment for every award recipient that felt personal, joyful, and unforgettable. His work behind the mic didn’t just set the mood—it started a new tradition. The NEXTies have always been celebratory, but this year, they grooved.

And speaking of grand entrances—a huge shoutout to Santa Cruz METRO for their visually stunning red carpet arrival experience. Parked alongside the venue was a wrapped ORAT bus, adorned with a breathtaking image by renowned photographer Frans Lanting: a vibrant monarch butterfly gliding across the surface. It was more than a backdrop—it was a message. A symbol of beauty, fragility, and our collective responsibility to protect the environment we call home. It made stepping onto the red carpet feel like stepping into a shared vision.

For Santa Cruz Vibes, the NEXTies was a full-circle moment. Many of the honorees have been longtime members of the Vibes universe—businesses we’ve profiled, artists we’ve featured, changemakers we’ve partnered with. To see them all under one roof, being lifted up by the community they serve, reminded us why we do what we do.

And none of this would have happened without Matthew Swinnerton. The founder of Event Santa Cruz and the soul behind the NEXTies, Matthew once again proved that local voices matter. His tireless commitment to elevating others continues to inspire us all.

Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Vibes Commitment

In the end, the 2025 NEXTies wasn’t just a ceremony—it was a mirror. A mirror reflecting a Santa Cruz that leads with heart, that lifts its own, and that believes in storytelling as a force for good.

But it was also a window—a glimpse of what’s possible when we put intention behind recognition, and when we shine a light on the people doing the work, quietly and passionately, day after day. It reminded us that these stories don’t begin and end on one night in May. They deserve to echo throughout the year.

As we move forward, Santa Cruz Vibes is carrying the NEXTies spirit with us into everything we do. Whether through our print pages, digital platforms, podcasts, or in-location media—we’re more committed than ever to celebrating the people and projects that make Santa Cruz more inclusive, more creative, and more connected.

Let this year’s NEXTies serve not only as a highlight, but as a compass: a reminder to keep telling stories that matter, to keep building bridges between neighbors, and to keep asking, “Who’s making a difference right now?”

Because the truth is, the NEXTies isn’t just a night. It’s a movement. And we’re honored to keep that movement alive—all year long.
